Welsh Surfing Federation Surf School
It's back for a 5th year! RIP CURL GIRLS TOUR at the WSF Surf School Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July 2008 Rip Curl are once again running the Girls Tour surfing promotion. The aim of the weekend is to try to introduce and encourage girls of all ages to the surfing lifestyle and to contribute to the development of womens surfing. To do this Rip Curl and Relentless energy drink are sponsoring a womens/girls surfing promotion by giving a free bag of goodies worth £35 with every lesson. For a normal WSF surf school price of £25 you get not only the usual high quality 2 hour lesson but also a bag of Rip Curl and other sponsors goodies. As if that's not enough everyone that takes part gets a snack
lunch, capoeira (Brazilian martial art)lesson, hot chocolate and chocolate biscuits - all
in the price of £25! There is a summary of the event at the bottom of the page CLICK HERE See also the Rip Curl website on this event. The contents of the 2008 goodie bag free with a £25 surf lesson At this point you are reading this and may be thinking "Yeah right. Sounds too good to be true". It is all true. We have run this event for several years so ask at surf shops in the area or give Rip Curl a call on 0844 8870 109.
Rip Curl are sponsoring only 5 of the top UK surf schools to host this event. The WSF were chosen as we have always provided coaching for girls and women and reflect this in the fact that we have highly qualified female instructors. Also Rip Curl acknowledges that the WSF surf school is a non-profit organisation that puts all profits into running the Welsh Surfing Federation. The Federation is the governing body for surfing in Wales. We hosted the Rip Curl Girls Tour in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 with last year having over 200 people taking part. This event will also take place in Newquay in Cornwall, Croyde in Devon, Bournemouth in Dorest and WSF Surf School at Llangennith in Gower
The event has been called Girls Surfing Days but is open to all ages 8 to 80 years old. I guess "Females Go Surfing" or "Women Go Surfing" didn't have such a ring to it when Rip Curl were naming the event.
We have 250 places (250 goodie bags) for this weekend spread over the 5 sessions. It is essential to book a place on this event as in previous years we were completely full by the day of the first lesson. When we are full on a session we will open a reserve list to fill any possible last minute cancellations. We have a team of us working on this weekend so you will be in smaller groups each with your own instructor. We will also arrange you into groups of ability so you will be learning with others at the same level (absolute beginners, only just standing up, confidently standing up and ready to turn and other techniques etc). In previous years the majority of people booked just one session on the event. If you are really keen to learn as much as possible you can book more than one session on each day and you will also get a goodie bag for each one. The session times will be:
WE ARE NOW NEARLY FULL ON ALL SESSIONS. It will take at least 30 minutes to check you in and changed into a wetsuit then your 2 hour lesson will start. You are welcolme to arrive early or stay on after your lesson
for the capoeira sessions and free lunch. These will be available between 12.00pm
and 4.00pm. Booking To book a place(s) you need to send us a message by email (preferably) or phone with the following information:
If you phone us don't be surprised if you get our answering machine as we surf as much as we can. Please leave all the above details and speak slowly. We will phone you back to take the booking as soon as we can. Dont worry if it takes a couple of days for us to get back to you because we answer our messages in order of when we get them. When we contact you we will require payment in full which we can take by card (advisable) on the phone or by cheque posted to us at WSF surf school, The Barn, The Croft, Llangennith, Swansea, SA3 1HU. Please note if paying by cheque the session will only be booked once the cheque is cashed so card payment is preferable. Once the session is booked we will then post you a receipt. Please bring this receipt with you to your lesson. We require payment in full for these sessions (for a normal lesson we only ask for a deposit and take the balance at the start of a lesson) as this makes the day a little easier for us. Medical conditions/Pregnancy You will be sent a consent form with your receipt of payment for your lesson(s). On this please let us know if you have any medical conditions that may affect your safety or others in the lesson. For example if you have asthma, epilepsy, heart conditions etc. If you may require medication such as an asthma pump the instructors can look after this for you and keep it close at hand during the lesson. We recommend that you should not take part in a lesson if you are pregnant. Surfing is a physical sport and if you are unsure as to whether you are fit to take part in a surf lesson we recommend you take medical advice. Bad weather At the WSF surf school we have really buoyant surfboards that mean we can run a normal surf session in very small surf of as little as 1/2 to 1 foot. As there is so much more being put into the Rip Curl sessions than a normal lesson we intend to run even if the sea is flat calm and there is no surf. If there is no surf we will use the surfboards to play games in the sea with the emphasis on fun. Even if we do not have surf for you to catch waves on just getting familiar with paddling and sitting on a surfboard is a big step towards standing up on a surfboard. Our only reason to cancel a session would be if there was a dangerously strong wind. The conditions will be assessed on each day and if a decision to cancel is made then we will announce it at the surf school. The decision to cancel will only be made by the surf school manager and in this event all refunds will be organised unless you are able to rearrange a lesson. In our season from April to October the majority of surf lessons are lucky enough to have fine weather but as we run from Wales not Hawaii we do not cancel surf lessons if it is raining or windy (unless dangerous). Surfing is an outdoor sport that means you can experience all of what weather we have (sometimes in the same day!). We have full wetsuits so you will be warmer in the water wearing a wetsuit in July than just standing on the beach. We will also have a marquee for you to change in.
What you need to bring to a lesson All of the surfing equipment (surfboard and wetsuit) is provided by us. You are welcolme to bring your own equipment too. All you need is a swimsuit, towel and clothes to change into after your lesson suitable for a Welsh summer! What if I have to cancel or change a booked lesson For the Rip Curl event in order to make things easier for us you will have paid in full in advance. If you cancel we will refund all money minus our normal deposit of £5 per person per session as a cancellation charge. This means you will get a refund of £20. Any refunds will not be given on the day but organised as soon as we can after the Rip Curl events. Once a booking has been made a transfer to another session can only happen if there is space in the session you wish to change to. In this case the deposit part of your original payment (£5 per person per session) would be kept by the surf school and an additional payment of £5 per person per session would be required for your new lesson. The surf school operates a bookings system which we hope is as fair as possible to our customers. The deposit is our guarantee that we can provide you a surf lesson when you want it, with a surfboard and wetsuit reserved. As the many people we teach drive a long way to learn to surf we know this is very important to you. We have a fixed number of surfboards and when we are fully booked for a session we can take no more people and turn others away. The surf school also needs to know in advance how many people we are teaching in a session to have the correct number of instructors working. In order to keep our costs down (and our lesson prices as low as possible) we only employ instructors when we need them. Please note: The £5 per person per session deposit part of your payment is not refundable or transferable to another session even on the same day. If you are concerned about the risk of losing a deposit because of problems with transport, illness, or any other unforeseen circumstance then we recommend you purchase holiday insurance to cover this.
